Press release of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the partial re-run for the elections in the Comoros

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, May 16, 2016/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, welcome the peaceful conduct of the partial re-run for the elections of President of Comoros and Governor of the Autonomous Island of Anjouan. They congratulate the people of Comoros for participating peacefully in the election and in the subsequent partial re-run, which was observed by an African Union Election Observer Mission.

The Chairperson and the Secretary-General commend the relevant national institutions for the orderly organization of the partial re-run. The same national institutions now have a vital role to ensure that the final results are a true reflection of the will of the people of Comoros.

The Chairperson and the Secretary-General encourage the Constitutional Court to release the final results in a transparent and timely manner. In the meantime, they call on all candidates to exercise restraint and show a sense of responsibility, as well as to work towards the interest of the people of Comoros and to maintain stability. The Chairperson and the Secretary-General underline the responsibility of the government to ensure a peaceful conclusion of the electoral process.
