The African Union calls for calm and restraint in the Republic of Congo

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, October 22, 2015/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, is following with deep concern the prevailing situation in the Republic of Congo. In this respect, she deplores the tension generated by the differences among the Congolese political stakeholders on the constitutional referendum scheduled to take place on 25 October 2015, as well as the violence that occurred in Brazzaville and in other cities.

The Chairperson of the Commission calls on all the concerned stakeholders to exercise utmost restraint and to spare no effort to avert any evolution likely to aggravate the current situation and to lead to instability. She urges them to seek, through dialogue, a solution to their differences, based on the respect of the relevant AU instruments, particularly the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
