The 22nd meeting of the Strategic Level Tripartite Coordination Mechanism on UNAMID took place on 20 October in Khartoum.

The Mechanism, composed of representatives of the Government of Sudan (GoS), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), is an instrument aimed at resolving issues and challenges related to UNAMID.

The GoS delegation was led by Ambassador Mahmoud Hassan Elamin, Acting Undersecretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The AU and the UN delegations were led by Ambassador Smail Chergui, AU Commissioner of Peace and Security, and El-Ghassim Wane, Assistant Secretary-General, Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), respectively. The UNAMID delegation was headed by the Joint Special Representative, Martin Uhomoibhi.

At the meeting, which took place in an open and frank atmosphere, participants discussed operational and logistics issues related to the effective implementation of UNAMID’s mandate and acknowledged improvements in this regard. Other key issues were the deliberations of the Joint Working Group (JWG) held in Khartoum from 17-20 October; it was decided that the JWG shall resume its discussions in two weeks’ time to arrive at practical steps on the way forward regarding UNAMID’s exit strategy.
